The 14-inch MacBook Pro is more of a statement of intent - and perhaps an admission - from Apple that it needed to make a machine that the Pro users would look at not even think of any other laptop. For those, the M1 MacBook Air or the M1 MacBook Pro are excellent options to look at.
However, Apple isn’t looking to target those buyers with the new MacBook Pro. Starting at Rs 1,94,900, the new MacBook Pro is an expensive laptop and the price tag immediately puts it out of reach of many buyers. The ProMotion display Apple has put in the MacBook Pro also shines when you are editing videos or photos on it. Those who use iMacs also would be impressed with what the M1 has to offer. Not once did the M1 Pro processor stutter or broke a sweat. Editing videos - even 8K ones -in Final Cut and it was really a joy to watch.

Truth be told, our day-to-day routine doesn’t involve some high-level professional work, which is why we went out of our comfort zone. The MacBook Pro is truly tested when you give it some hardcore tasks to perform. What mattered was how Jordan took his game to a whole new level when it came to crunch games. But when you pay close to Rs 2 lakh for a laptop then you expect it to deliver performance that is like Michael Jordan turning up on a regular game day at the United Centre in the 90s in Chicago and leading the Bulls to victories day in and day out. During day-to-day usage, the MacBook Pro 14-inch is ridiculously fast and macOS Monterey is designed to make the best of it. Our review unit came with 32GB of RAM and 512GB SSD and the 10-core M1 Pro processor. It makes you marvel at how fast the performance of the laptop is. For someone who has used the M1 MacBook for more than a year now, the M1 Pro manages to more than impress. The graphics performance is twice as fast as that of the M1 processor, which already is a fantastic processor. Apple has added a 16-core GPU to the M1 Pro. It helps that the processor has eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores. While we can’t report on the M1 Max as our review unit was powered by the M1 Pro and we can say that the M1 Pro knocks it out of the park with aplomb.
An extra inch might not seem too big but the size is ideal as 16-inch at times feels really high whereas 13-3-inch MacBook Pro seemed a bit small. This is a new size for the MacBook Pro as Apple offered 16-inch and 13.3-inch variants earlier. The trackpad on the MacBooks have always been great and the 14-inch MacBook Pro is no different. The keys are responsive and it’s really nice to type on. The Magic Keyboard which has become a staple in MacBooks hasn’t been replaced. The function keys are back and you get a TouchID button, which works really well. The TouchBar was a divisive feature and even though some may have liked it, Apple never really managed to make a strong case for its survival. The other big design change is that the TouchBar is gone and in all likelihood into oblivion. The ports offer users to connect multiple devices including external displays, which would be welcome by many Pro users. More ports mean that Apple wants the professionals to use the laptop without the hassle of always having a dongle on them. The Type-C ports can be used to charge the MacBook but it isn’t as fast as the MagSafe port. You get three USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SD card slot (we had really forgotten what it is to use an SD card on a MacBook), a 3.5mm headphone jack and the MagSafe port also makes a comeback. The return of the ports is the other bigger design change in the new MacBook Pro. We used the 14-inch MacBook Pro for a while to see whether all the fuss over them is worthy and if by going back to some of its roots has Apple delivered the ultimate laptop? Read on to find out. The 2021 MacBook Pro saw Apple do what it does with utmost sophistication: keep things simple. Apple seemed to be tinkering too much with the MacBook Pro. The TouchBar was added - a divisive feature - at the cost of function keys being removed. It yanked off the ports - preferring form over functionality - and the keyboard issues with the MacBook Pro were notorious. The MacBook Pro has been an anomaly in this as Apple at times tinkered with it too much. Keeping things simple has always been Apple’s forte and something that Steve Jobs really instilled in the company’s design and product philosophy.

You get the M1 Mac, M1 Pro Mac and the M1 Max Mac. You get the good iPhone, the better iPhone and the best iPhone (generally the Pro series). Back in 1977, Apple came out with a marketing brochure that declared, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” To keep things simple, Apple has mostly followed the rule of three: the good, the better and the best.
